Sleeping cottages, Maine State Sanatorium, Hebron, ca. 1907
Contributed by Maine Historic Preservation CommissionDescription
The women's cottage in the foreground and the men's cottage at rear, two of the sleeping facilities at the Maine State Sanatorium in Hebron.
The privately operated tuberculosis hospital believed patients would recover with a healthy, rich diet, rest, and lots of fresh air. They slept outdoors on porches or in rooms that were open to the outdoors.
The facility opened in 1904 and became a state facility in 1915, renamed the Western Maine Sanatorium.
